This course provides a comprehensive overview of phonology, i.e., the study of sounds in human language. After distinguishing phonology from phonetics and re-visiting the basics of human sound production, students will learn the underlying principles of how sound is systematically organized into meaningful units. The course introduces fundamental concepts of phonology, such as phonemes, allophones, and syllable structures, as well as phonological processes and how they are applied in different languages. Upon completion, students will possess a firm grasp of the theoretical foundation of phonology and be able to analyze various languages with regards to their sound structure. This course is suitable for anyone interested in language, linguistics, and communication.
