“Culture and education are the lethal weapons against all kinds of fundamentalism.”
Marjane Satrapi, Iranian author1
While on the one hand, globalisation and cultural diversity have been increasing over the last decades, global conflicts and potential for cultural conflict have as well. In light of these developments, the need for cultural (self-)awareness and intercultural competence is stronger than ever. From birth onwards, culture shapes every individual’s thinking and perception. For many children, school is one of the principal places to encounter cultural diversity; an institution where cultural exchange happens and societal norms are implemented from an early age and all through the important years of adolescence. It is thus crucial for teachers to have an understanding of (their own and others’) culture(s) and an awareness of how culture shapes individuals. Teachers need to be equipped for teaching in culturally diverse classrooms, handling cultural conflict and intercultural communication, and preparing pupils for a globalised world. The international BaTEG Summer School 2023 would like to address the following questions: • What is culture? How does culture affect societies, individuals, and education? • What is cultural education? • What are inter/multi/transcultural skills and how can they be acquired? • What is a global mindset and how can it be developed? • How can universities and teacher educators equip teachers to handle culturally diverse classrooms? • How can teachers help students acquire an understanding of culture and inter/ transculturality? • How can culture and diversity be integrated into the curriculum? • How is cultural education implemented across the globe? 1) Persepolis: The Story of a Return. Vol. 2. New York: Pantheon Books. 2004.
