PS The Scottish Renaissance and its Literary-Cultural Implications

ONLINE Seminar

This seminar aims at introducing and exploring the literary movement of the Scottish Renaissance (1920-1950), which also had significant implications within the field of national Scottish politics. From the angle of literary as well as cultural studies, we will be looking into novels such as Neil Miller Gunn's Butcher's Broom, Fionn Mac Colla's And the Cock Crew, and Lewis Grassic Gibbon's Sunset Song. In addition, we will read some (enigmatic) poems written by Hugh MacDiarmid. The post-Renaissance novel Consider the Lilies by Iain Crichton Smith will also be considered. Topics involved include: literature as a means of constructing a national identity, Gaelicised English as an expression of a hybrid identity, and Scotland as an internal colony.
