B4) Syntactic variation with "seem" in a Middle English romance
Database: Sir Thomas Malory's Tale of Sir Gareth of Orkney
Programs: Web page at http://sites.fas.harvard.edu/~chaucer/special/litsubs/romances/gareth.htm
Tasks:
- Search for all uses of the verb seem (including beseem etc.).
- Compare the structures you find with those that the verb seem can be used in today. Which structure is the most frequent one, which is second etc.?
- Does the verb seem occur in any other meanings than the current one?
Notes:
- Rather than searching a text manually for all possible variants of the structure, it might be useful to highlight, copy and paste the text into a text file. After that, you can create a concordance in AntConc or Wordsmith and retrieve all variants from that list.
