G5) KARAL, MARTIN; Distractors during word monitoring

Tasks:

• Carry out the word monitoring task at http://www.intro2psycholing.net/experiments/sentence_processing/monitoring/monitoring_index.php under two different conditions:

1)      while playing English speech on the radio, TV or Internet at a volume level that should be similar to the one of the auditory experiment, and

2)      while doing the same with speech in your mother tongue.

• Get some friends to do the same for you without letting them know the purpose of the experiment.
• Can you measure any differences between the two conditions?

Notes:

• If you do not get the expected results, a reason may be that reaction time experiments are subject to many distorting factors.
• Which problems did you notice with the experiment? What could an experimenter do to prevent these from arising and to obtain undistorted results?
