at the Center of Excellence „Cognitive Interaction Technology“ (CITEC),
Faculty of Technology, Bielefeld University, invites applications for

*** 1 Research Assistant (Salary level E 13 TV-L, 100%) ***

to be filled as soon as possible for a period of 3 years
(further extension possible). 
 

* Description of Responsibilities *

The position belongs to the faculty staff („Grundbereich") of the 
Social Cognitive Systems group. Responsibilities hence involve
participation in the research, teaching and organization activities
of the group. The main focus is on research, scientific 
qualification (Ph.D.) in Computer Science is encouraged.
 
The Social Cognitive Systems group investigates what it takes
for cognitive systems to become socially intelligent interaction 
partners. We combine a basic research perspective with 
applications in novel scenarios of human-machine cooperation
or assistance (including for special user groups). The group is
involved in numerous projects funded by DFG, BMBF or the EU
(for more information see scs.techfak.uni-bielefeld.de).
 
The open position may contribute research on one or more
of the following (or related) topics:
- online machine learning in social interaction
- dynamic causal (Bayesian) models for perception, reasoning
  and decision-making in social cognition
- prediction-based embodied social behavior processing
 

* Required Qualifications *
 
We are seeking a highly-motivated candidate with an above-average
academic degree (Master, Diploma) in Computer Science and 
experience or interest in the research topics listed above.
 
The successful PhD candidate is expected to have 
- excellent math skills
- experience in machine learning
- strong programming skills (Java, Python, C++)
- good command of the English language
- the ability to work in an international, multidisciplinary setting

CITEC provides an excellent research environment, modern facilities, 
and a culture of interdisciplinary cooperation and communication. It is a 
large-scale research center for intelligent systems and cognitive interaction
between humans and technical systems. It greatly contributes to the status
of Bielefeld University as one of the premier locations for studying intelligent 
interactive systems. The position is located in the Social Cognitive Systems
Group (head: Prof. Dr.-Ing. Stefan Kopp), which is part of the Faculty of 
Technology at Bielefeld University as well as of CITEC.

Bielefeld is one of the 20 largest cities in Germany (population >320.000) 
and a lively place with a lot of cultural and entertainment opportunities.
It is located in the center of Germany, surrounded by beautiful forests 
offering many possibilities for recreational outdoor activities. Bielefeld
is directly connected to Germany's high-speed rail system, and many 
of Germany's metropolitan areas can be reached easily.
