CRITICAL REFLECTION ON SIMULATION SCIENCE (OPEN TO ALL DISCIPLINES)

The DFG-funded Cluster of Excellence "Data-Integrated Simulation Science" (EXC 2075) is an interdisciplinary research center with more than 200 scientists performing research towards a common goal: We target a new class of modeling and computational methods based on available data from various sources, in order to take the usability, precision and reliability of simulations to a new level.

THE PROJECT

The scope of the project relates to critically reflecting the broader impact of simulation science. Potential areas of research might include (but are not limited to) ethical and social concerns connected with simulation science, such as data ethics, privacy issues, or dual use; the function of different media (including literature and art) in the critical reflection of potential risks and effects of simulation science; or empirical studies on impact assessment of research approaches within the cluster. The successful candidate will work closely together with the SimTech “Platform for Reflection”, which offers a forum for reflecting on more general implications of the research conducted within EXC 2075. Their research will also be connected to the Stuttgart Research Focus “Interchange Forum for Reflecting on Intelligent Systems” (SRF IRIS) (https://www.iris.uni-stuttgart.de/), which they can join as a member upon interest.

YOUR TASKS

You will be responsible for developing new tools for reflecting upon the impact of simulation science both within and beyond EXC 2075.  While the postdoctoral project proposed will be rooted in your home discipline, it should demonstrate a strong interdisciplinary scope and address key issues arising from research conducted within EXC 2075.

WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Considering that reflection often requires an ‘outside view’, candidates with a doctorate in cognitive science, psychology, or the humanities are particularly encouraged to apply. The ideal candidate is further required to demonstrate a solid interest and expertise in interdisciplinary approaches, proven by an interdisciplinary background and/or interdisciplinary research proposal.

WE OFFER

If you work with us,

  • you will enter a team of motivated and supportive colleagues
  • you will work in the dynamic environment of the Cluster of Excellence SimTech and be part of the largest research alliance at the university
  • An inspirational and supportive research environment at the Cluster of Excellence SimTech
  • Diverse and responsible tasks in a dynamic and friendly team
