in the DFKI research department of agents and simulated reality (ASR).
Both full-time positions are initially limited to three years.

ABOUT DFKI:

The German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) is Germany's leading
business-oriented research institution in the field of innovative software technologies
based on artificial intelligence methods. In the international scientific community,
DFKI ranks among the most recognized Centers of Excellence and currently is the
biggest research center worldwide in the area of Artificial Intelligence and its

The DFKI ASR research department Agents and Simulated Reality, headed by
Prof. Dr. Philipp Slusallek, develops innovative methods of Artificial Intelligence (AI),
Visual Computing and High-Performance Computing for applications mainly in the areas of
Industry 4.0, Smart Living, and Autonomous Driving.
The I2S research team of the ASR department, headed by PD Dr. Matthias Klusch, performs
research and development of intelligent information systems in the Internet and Web.
Main focus of the team is on the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Agent Technologies,
Services Computing, and Semantic Technologies for innovative means of intelligent data analysis
and service coordination.

Saarbruecken is the capital of the small federal state Saarland located in South-West Germany;
it is a stone's throw away from France and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The city in the valley
of the river Saar has around 190.000 citizens and is one of the economic centres of the European
Saar-Lor-Lux region, while a certain "savoir vivre" mentality permeates the regional atmosphere.
DFKI in Saarbruecken is located on the campus of the Saarland University together with other
renown research institutes in computer science such as the Max-Planck institutes for informatics
and software systems.

OPEN POSITIONS:

+++ Position 1 (Job reference 91-19/PS): Researcher +++

The successful applicant will perform research and development in the context of an
European research project on intelligent, conversational agents and service coordination
in support of the reception and integration of migrants in Europe.
The project is expected to commence on February 1, 2020.
Main task of the successful applicant is research and development of AI methods for
context-based planning and execution of semantic services through
virtual assistants (intelligent agents) of distributed, mobile applications.
We expect applicants to have the following qualification, skills and competencies:
-  An above-average Master (MSc) degree in computer science
   (or in a discipline with significant overlap with computer science)
   and focus on AI.
-  Good knowledge and working expertise, ideally with a proven record of publications,
   in at least two of the following fields:
   - Semantic Web
   - Services Computing
   - Intelligent Agents
   - AI Planning
   and the willingness to get familiarized with these subject areas quickly,
   sufficiently, and independently when needed.
-  Strong programming skills in Java, C++; Web services programming;
   Working knowledge of Protegé (ontology development), Android app development.
   Basic knowledge of agent-oriented programming is of advantage.
-  Excellent spoken and written command of English
-  Independent, committed and highly team-oriented way of working
This position can also be filled as (Senior) Engineer depending on qualification and experience.

+++ Position 2 (Job reference 86-19/PS): Researcher +++

Main task of the successful applicant is research and development of
hybrid and trustworthy AI methods of machine learning and planning,
in particular explainable, hybrid learning and reasoning techniques
with prevalent application in the field of autonomous driving.
We expect applicants to have the following qualification, skills and competencies:
- Very good master degree in computer science (or a discipline with
  significant overlap with computer science) and focus on AI
- Good knowledge in one or more relevant subject areas such as
  machine learning, automated planning and reasoning, semantic technologies,
  and the willingness to familiarize yourself with the subjects quickly, sufficiently,
  and independently when needed.
- Good proficiency in software engineering, e.g. Java, C#, Python
- Excellent English language skills (speaking and writing)
- Independent, committed and highly team-oriented way of working
