The newly established Max Planck Research Group for Rationality Enhancement
<https://sites.google.com/site/falklieder/rel>, headed by Dr. Falk Lieder
<https://sites.google.com/site/falklieder/home> at the Max Planck Institute
for Intelligent Systems <https://www.is.mpg.de/> in Tübingen, Germany, is
looking for Postdocs and Ph.D. students for three projects that integrate
approaches from computational cognitive science, machine learning, and
artificial intelligence to develop intelligent systems that augment
people's cognitive capabilities.

*1. Postdoc and/or Ph.D. Student Position in Metacognitive Learning /
Program Induction*:
The goals of the first project are to 1) reverse-engineer the learning
algorithms through which people discover and continuously refine their
highly efficient algorithms for planning, reasoning, and decision-making,
and 2) develop automatic methods for discovering optimal heuristics and
general principles of good decision-making. For more information, please
see the official job ad at
https://is.tuebingen.mpg.de/jobs/postdoc-or-phd-student-in-metacognitive-learning-program-induction-m-f
.

*2. Ph.D. Student and/or Postdoc Position in Developing Cognitive Tutors*:
The primary goal of this project is to develop intelligent systems that
teach people optimal cognitive strategies for decision-making, planning,
reasoning, and problem-solving. Our approach combines computational models
of cognitive skill acquisition with state-of-the-art methods from
artificial intelligence and machine learning. For more information, please
see the official job ad at

*3. Ph.D. Student and/or Postdoc Position in Developing Cognitive
Prostheses*:
At the beginning of this project, you will be working with a web-developer
to create a to-do list gamification app for helping people overcome
procrastination and achieve their goals. You will evaluate alternative
versions of this cognitive prosthesis in field experiments. Later on in
this project, you will develop additional cognitive prostheses for
goal setting and/or decision support. For more information, please see the
official job ad at

*The Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems*The Max Planck Research
Group for Rationality Enhancement is part of the MPI for Intelligent
Systems in Tübingen, Germany. The institute is a world-class center for
foundational research in machine learning, computer vision, robotics, and
material science. We are part of the Cyber Valley Initiative
<https://is.mpg.de/en/news/cyber-valley-attracts-research-group-leaders-from-around-the-world>
that
is bringing new research groups, professorships, and industry partners to
Tübingen and Stuttgart. The majority of the institute’s scientific
employees come from outside of Germany. You will work among gifted students
and experienced scientists from all over the world; and have access to
excellent infrastructure, including several regular series of tutorials,
lectures, journal clubs and invited talks by international guests, as well
as a large computer cluster, and dedicated full-time specialists. The
working language at the institute is English.

*Tübingen*Tübingen <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T%C3%BCbingen> is a
scenic medieval university town, cradled in what is simultaneously one of
Germany’s most beautiful landscapes one of Europe’s most economically
successful areas. Stuttgart airport is an hour by bus, Frankfurt airport
can be reached in two hours by train. Most locals speak English and
knowledge of German is not required to live here.
