The Knowledge Engineering Group of the Department of Computer Science at the Technical University in Darmstadt, Germany has an immediate opening for a *Doctoral Researcher* (Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter) in the area of *machine learning*. The task of the job holder is primarily to carry out the project work for a research project for the *early detection of epidemiological hazards* using machine learning. The project is conducted in cooperation with epidemiologists and other medical staff from medical institutes and hospitals. The project will investigate machine learning techniques that are suitable for identifying epidemiological hazards, such as disease outbreaks, from near-realtime clinical data such as those generated by emergency services and emergency rooms in hospitals. For this purpose, methods of *anomaly detection* and *time series analysis* shall be used. Of particular interest in this sensitive field are methods for generating *interpretable models*, such as rules, that may be extracted from more complex models or generated interactively with a domain expert. *Requirements*: The prerequisite is a university degree in computer science or related fields (such as mathematics or electrical engineering). The ideal candidate should have profound knowledge and research experience in the field of machine learning. Knowledge of anomaly detection, time series analysis, interpretable models, interactive approaches and deep learning is also desirable. Basic knowledge in the medical field is advantageous, but not a prerequisite. The candidate has to have a very good knowledge of the German language. The candidate should be interested in the scientific and practical treatment of the topics and be willing to work independently in an interdisciplinary team of researchers as well as in collaboration with (medical) personnel outside the university. The position serves the scientific qualification of the applicant. The opportunity is given to prepare for a Ph.D. The Technical University of Darmstadt aims to increase the number of female personnel and therefore particularly invites women to apply. Applicants with a degree of disability of at least 50 or equivalent are preferred in the case of equal aptitude. The remuneration is in accordance with the collective agreement for the Technical University of Darmstadt (TV-TU Darmstadt). Part-time employment is generally possible. The position starts in *July 2018* and will run up *to 3 years*. Deadline for the application is May 20th, 2018. Please send your inquiries and application (including the identification number) to Prof. Johannes Fürnkranz (ke@informatik.tu-darmstadt.de). *Deadline* for application: *20th of May 2018* Identification number: 180 English version: https://www.ke.tu-darmstadt.de/staff/jobs/ESEG German version: https://www.intern.tu-darmstadt.de/dez_vii/stellen/stellen_details_267648.de.jsp
