PS Literary-Cultural Texts Analysed through the Lens(es) of Postcolonial Theories

In this seminar, we will be looking into theoretical postcolonial approaches towards speechless subalternity (G. Spivak), hybridisation, third spaces, sly civility (H. Bhabha), the west and the rest (S. Hall) as well as the negation of the Other (F. Fanon). 20th-century novels will be dealt with as textual resources for identifying and contrasting postcolonial perspectives and concepts. The following novels will be analysed: J. M. Coetzee: Foe, George Orwell: Burmeses Days, Jean Rhys: Wide Sargasso Sea and Iain Crichton Smith: Consider the Lilies. Class participants should have copies of these four short novels.
