In the research seminar, students undergo the entire process of quantitative empirical social
research from the identification of a research question over the formulation of theoretically
deducted hypotheses to empirical analyses. Over a period of two consecutive semesters, students
will conduct their own research projects in the field of sociological research on education and the
labour market. The empirical analyses will be based on Starting Cohort 6 of the German National
Educational Panel Study (NEPS), a large-scale longitudinal survey of the working-age population in
Germany. The first part of the seminar (summer term 2024) will be devoted to identifying a relevant
research question against the background of the current state of research, deriving theory-guided
hypotheses and developing a suitable research design. The second part of the seminar (winter term
2024/25) will be devoted to working with the data and transferring the findings of the projects into a
scientific research article.
