Introduction to Islamic Art and Archaeology

Topics and approaches across the field of Islamic Art and Archaeology will be introduced in this class, which addresses students at an advanced level and with a background either in Oriental Studies or in Art History. On the examples of selected works – objects, buildings, manuscripts – a variety of approaches are discussed. Classwork consists mainly of discussion and implies obligatory reading for each session. Instead of an exam paper, alternative forms of text production will be applied.
